George Russell Takes Controversial Pole at Austria After Max Verstappen Crash

Mercedes seemed to have the Austrian Grand Prix pole all but assured midway through the final runs on Saturday (June 27), as George Russell went purple in the first sector.

But then, well, a bit of a disaster happened in Formula 1 qualifying.

Max Verstappen spun out entering turn 9 with a head of steam as time expired. This wreck and the yellow section at the end of the lap seemed to conclude qualifying, giving Charles Leclerc pole and Lewis Hamilton second.

Russell then completed his lap anyway and ended up with the pole following an investigation by the stewards.

“It was an amazing lap,” Russell said. “I saw the yellow. I had a big lift into the corner. I was five-tenths up. Out of it, I was two-and-a-half-tenths up. It was a single yellow as well and not a double.”

Russell’s pole is the 11th of his career, and the Brit was able to put the Ferrari drivers between himself and Kimi Antonelli in fourth.

Other than the Verstappen incident, there were no issues in qualifying.

Verstappen was able to just hang onto 10th in this round in spite of not making a second fast lap. That will save the Red Bull driver an extra set of soft tires for Sunday’s race that nobody else in the top 16 has, in spite of his later crash.
