This week I’ll just offer some thoughts and observations for the week leading up to NASCAR’s last weekend off for the Cup series this year. I don’t usually do much open-wheel racing coverage but with the Cup race at Bristol Saturday night I decided to take a busman’s holiday and watch the IndyCar race from …

I’d hate to call it a “meeting of the minds” in that some participants obviously lack one, but there was a mass assemblage of “principals involved with the product” at Michigan on Friday. NASCAR hierarchy, drivers, team owners, crew chiefs and representatives of the car makers involved in the sport gathered together to discuss the …

It’s summertime and the living is easy. As per normal, news from the racing circuit has hit a low ebb as folks busy themselves with their summer vacations and NFL players report to the summer camps in preparation for the beginning of the preseason, which effectively takes over the sports universe despite NASCAR’s once high …

Kyle Busch celebrates after winning the XFINITY Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

You’d think Kyle Busch would have been too busy celebrating this weekend. But in a mind numbing case of biting the hand that feeds him, in victory lane after Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at the Brickyard, race-winner Busch revealed that he feels NASCAR treats him unfairly and has an ax to grind with him. …

Beside the Rising Tide: Real Feel Meltdown

I’ll offer some quick thoughts this week as the mercury flirts with triple digits here at Eyesore Acres and the “real-feel” number is a balmy 115. If this keeps up I just might have to rethink that air-conditioning thing. How many times have you heard the Cup drivers who compete weekly referred to as “The …

Beside The Rising Tide: Remembering Davey Allison – Part 2

Robert Yates Racing and the team’s talented young driver Davey Allison made their official debut at the 1989 Daytona 500. Things got off to an inauspicious start. Davey was running well when Geoff Bodine got into his rear bumper and sent the No. 28 car spinning. The car rolled, but came down on all four wheels, and Allison limped off to the pits, where the crew was able to repair the car well enough to get him back out there for points. Allison finished 25th in that year’s race.

A funny thing happened Saturday night at Kentucky (a bunch of not-so-funny things happened at Kentucky leading up to the race, but we’ll get to that.) Saturday, in the midst of a NASCAR event, a stock car race broke out. Was it a perfect stock car race? Not hardly. Was it a decent stock car …

Naturally the big headline in the aftermath of Sunday night’s (or was it Monday morning’s?) race wasn’t so much the fact Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the race, but that as the clock prepared to strike three the No. 3 car of Austin Dillon struck the catchfence and a fortunately limited amount of debris pelted the …

Yep, it has indeed been a long strange trip. Come this Sunday night (shooting a hostile sideways glance at NBC here.) for the first time in recent memory, I won’t be tuning into a stock car race, even though I get the station it will be broadcast on and I’ll be free that evening. Again, …
