Corey Day led 136 laps from the pole, won the opening stage and held off Carson Kvapil in the closing laps while fighting through lapped traffic to win the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series’ Focused Health 302 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Oct. 3 in a thrilling finish.
“That was badass,” Day told The CW broadcast on the frontstretch. “I knew we’d be able to be a title contender from the start of the year … we’re getting things rolling back in the right direction.”
Day bounced off the outside wall multiple times while battling with Kvapil late in the race to earn his third win of the season.
“I was able to find some speed in the bottom of (turns) 1 and 2 and just never really tried the fence,” Kvapil told The CW broadcast on pit road postrace. “Once I got in front of him (Day), the only thing I could do was to run the bottom and he just did a really good job running the top.”
Jesse Love, Brent Crews and Taylor Gray completed the top five behind Day and Kvapil.
Sam Mayer, Jeremy Clements, William Sawalich, Austin Hill and Anthony Alfredo rounded out the top 10.
The major incident of the race occurred on the restart to begin the second stage as Brandon Jones crashed after struggling with his car due to a loose wheel after winning the race off pit road.
Jones overcorrected his car in the middle of turns 1 and 2 and hit the outside wall head on, collecting Justin Allgaier in the crash.
Jones was done for the night after the incident while Allgaier’s No. 7 team managed to fix the damage and pass Jones on the leaderboard to gain an extra point in the standings before eventually retiring. Jones was later disqualified after having four or more loose lug nuts after the race; he finished last and lost eight points.
Despite a quiet 13th-place run, Sheldon Creed still holds the points lead by 19 points over Kvapil, who moves up to second.
Love is in third 22 points behind and Allgaier dropped down to fourth, 31 points out of first, while Day completes the top five.
