DARLINGTON, S.C. — Rain may have delayed the ending of Sunday night’s (Sept. 6) Cook Out Southern 500, but Brad Keselowski was the only driver in the NASCAR Cup Series field to get hit by the Hurricane a.k.a. Carson Hocevar.
On lap 107 of the 367-lap race, Hocevar clipped the left rear of Keselowski’s No. 6 Ford, sending the 2012 Cup champion into the outside wall before he spun out. The incident brought out a yellow within the last 10 laps of stage 1, thus ending the stage.
“He ran into me,” Keselowski told Above the Yellow Line Media.
When asked if there was a history between the two, Keselowski replied with, “No, but there will be.
“His day is coming. It’s coming hard.”
Prior to the contact, Hocevar had been trying to pass Keselowski for several laps. In the previous two sets of corners prior the wreck, Hocevar had even dove to the inside of the No. 6 but to no avail. Then, the two cars collided, even though Hocevar didn’t acknowledge that they did touch afterward.
“Yeah, he spun,” Hocevar said.
When asked to elaborate, Hocevar replied with, “I don’t know. He spun.”
When he was informed of Keselowski’s comments, he noted the wreck wasn’t intentional and that, “I’ll tighten my belts.”
A little later in the Cup garage, RFK Racing Senior Director of Communications and Spire Motorsports co-owner Jeff Dickerson were seen having a conversation. When asked for comment from Frontstretch, Dickerson politely declined.
Keselowski later spun on his own entering pit road and ultimately settled for a 23rd-place result.
Hocevar made his way up to 11th, where he finished as the second-best Chevrolet. He remains 12th in The Chase standings but lost nine points to points-leader Denny Hamlin, sitting 89 points back now.
