Legacy Motor Club Sues Rick Ware Racing

Legacy Motor Club has filed a lawsuit against Rick Ware Racing over a charter dispute, according to court documents filed to the Mecklenburg County Clerk of Superior Courts on April 1.

The lawsuit alleges that RWR backed out of their end of an agreement the two teams came to on March 3, that included the sale of one of RWR’s charters to Legacy. The sale would allow Legacy to expand to three full-time chartered cars in 2026.

According to the document filed by Legacy, RWR, by its own admission, is “strapped for cash and unable to compete at a Cup Series level,” which led to the discussion between the two teams about a potential charter sale back in January.

After allegedly signing a binding agreement, Legacy claims that RWR “will not, under any circumstances, close the parties’ transaction.” Legacy also claims that it had no choice but to seek court intervention after trying “to talk sense into RWR, to no avail.”

Legacy has filed for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against RWR, seeking to “preserve the status quo until the rights of the parties can be determined.”

Frontstretch has reached out to both teams for comment with no response at this time. However, RWR responded to Sports Business Journal‘s Adam Stern with a statement refuting Legacy’s claims.

“This lawsuit distorts the actual facts and is a misguided attempt to tarnish our reputation,” the statement reads. “RWR has negotiated in good faith and operated with the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. We are confident that the truth will prevail and look forward to swiftly resolving this matter through the proper legal channels.”

Legacy currently fields two full-time cars for John Hunter Nemechek and Erik Jones, as well as a part-time third car for majority team owner Jimmie Johnson. RWR, meanwhile, fields one full-time car for Cody Ware, and another part-time car that has only been driven in two races by Corey LaJoie so far this season.
