Austin Hill Fends Off Late Race Challengers to Win Xfinity Race At Atlanta

Austin Hill once again emerged victorious in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday (Feb. 22). He won in dominant fashion, defending the lead through multiple late restarts and challenges from Justin Allgaier and Aric Almirola.

The win is Hill’s 11th in his Xfinity career, eighth on a drafting track, and third straight at Atlanta.

“I want to give a huge shoutout to everybody at [Richard Childress Racing and Earnhardt Childress Racing engines],” Hill told The CW after the race. “Chad Haney, first career win as a crew chief, so cool for him. He’s been working his tail off this offseason. Him and I, I think, are gonna work great together.

”We’re gonna soak this one up, drink a lot of beer and get ready for the next race.”

Hill continued the pattern of Richard Childress Racing’s dominant performances at superspeedways, as he swept the stages and led all but 17 laps. His 146 laps led were enough to make Hill the all time lap leader at superspeedways in NASCAR Xfinity Series history, surpassing both Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in doing so.

A late caution on Lap 154 from debris on the front of Sammy Smith’s car enabled a restart with three laps to go. As the field came to the restart, Allgaier was lined up below Hill on the bottom line. Allgaier came out of the restart in the lead with a push from teammate Smith. Hill quickly charged back up front but still faced a challenge from Almirola who got Hill loose into turn 3 and came out with the lead.

Hill then proceeded to once again reclaim the lead on the final lap as cars started to make contact and cause a massive wreck behind the leaders, with Parker Retzlaff getting turned and collecting multiple cars. Race control kept the race green and Hill led back to the finish line and took the win.

Allgaier beat out Almirola to finish second. Smith and Nick Sanchez rounded out the top five.

Jeb Burton, Daniel Dye, Leland Honeyman, William Sawalich, and Harrison Burton rounded out the top ten.
