Jimmie Johnson Takes Opening Indianapolis Practice

At a speed of 184.185 mph, Jimmie Johnson won opening practice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in his No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.

Circulating the 2.5-mile track in 48.864 seconds, he beat second-place Denny Hamlin by a whopping 0.434 seconds.

More than a full second back was Casey Mears, who brought his No. 13 Chevrolet to third on the boards ahead of Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman and Carl Edwards.

Defending Brickyard 400 champion Kyle Busch ran into an issue in Turn 2, as he made contact with the No. 32 of Patrick Carpentier, causing the No. 18 to spin.

Suffering little damage, Busch finishes the session 12th quick.

Jeff Gordon ran his first laps of 2016 in the No. 88 Chevrolet, finishing ninth quick at a 50.174. Tony Stewart jumped in front of Gordon to finish eighth while Chase Elliott and Martin Truex, Jr. completed the top 10.

Looks like he lost the sand. The experimental parts are working pretty good.

Indy needs a pit road like Pocono.
