Kyle Larson won Sunday’s (Sept. 12) NASCAR Cup Series race at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway in double overtime after neither Alex Bowman nor Joey Logano could get beside him on the final restart.
Larson took the checkered flag for the first time in 51 races in an event that had a whopping 18 caution flags.
The race was sent into overtime on lap 238 when Chris Buescher hit the wall in turns 1 and 2 after a brake rotor issue. It then went into double overtime after Shane van Gisbergen spun in turn 1.
Larson got a great restart to ensure the Nos. 48 or 22 could get beside him and drove off into the Illinois sunset.
Bowman, Logano, William Byron, Ross Chastain, Austin Dillon, Connor Zilisch, Carson Hocevar, Denny Hamlin and Austin Cindric completed the top 10.
Several Chase drivers were involved in a lap 141 dust-up on the exit of turn 2 that saw Bubba Wallace, Chase Briscoe and Byron all spin. All three drivers continued in the race, albeit with damaged race cars.
Ryan Blaney suffered a brake failure on lap 155 while going down the frontstretch and hit the wall in turn 1 in a similar incident to Zane Smith’s earlier hard crash.
Briscoe and Chase Elliott crashed hard with 28 laps to go in turn 1 after Elliott lost his brakes. Elliott and Briscoe finished 31st and 32nd, respectively.
Tyler Reddick, Bell and Wallace were collected in a huge crash with 18 laps to go while running inside the top 10.
On the ensuing restart, Ty Gibbs and Daniel Suarez also went around on the backstretch.
Only six of 16 Chase drivers finished inside the top 10.
