DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Lap 1 of Saturday’s season-opening Truck race saw three-wide racing and a big-time wreck. And that set the tone for a true battle of attrition that ended with only 14 trucks on the lead lap. Bruised and battered, the field looked like it had spent the night short-tracking.
And that was true in victory lane as well, as a short-tracker won on NASCAR’s most famous superspeedway. A brilliant crossover move on the backstretch coming to the checkers put Timothy Peters side-by-side with Todd Bodine, and well-timed drafting support from Dennis Setzer was enough to give the Virginian his second career Truck Series victory.
“I’m going to Disney World!,” exclaimed Peters, whose only previous Truck victory came on the bullring of Martinsville.
Bodine was understandably dejected after finishing second, but acknowledged that Peters got him with his late-race move. “He’s a good kid and if I’ve got to lose he’s a good one to lose to” said the winner of the last two Daytona races.
Setzer, polesitter Jason White and Matt Crafton rounded out the top five. Austin Dillon and the No. 3 truck enjoyed a short return to Daytona, as he triggered the lap 1 wreck that took out a number of trucks.
