Mason Massey was in fourth place when the white flag flew in the ARCA Menards Series West race at Portland International Raceway on Saturday, Aug. 8. Then the top two, Nitro Motorsports teammates Sam Corry and Ethan Tovo, battled and went off track. Kyle Steckly momentarily took the lead until the final corner. Massey made the pass for the victory, winning by 0.423 seconds.
“It was a wild lap, man,” Massey told FloRacing. “I just knew I had to have myself in a good spot there coming to the white. And over here, they got to racing and they ran off the track a little bit, I think, and we went by them. And then off the final turn, turn 10, I tried to put some pressure on the 53. Then I missed the corner and he missed it worse and I was able to get by him on the frontstretch.”
Massey won for the second time both this season and in his career.
Steckly finished second, followed by Massey’s Bill McAnally Racing teammate Hailie Deegan in third. Tovo wound up fourth and Eric Johnson Jr. was fifth.
Jeff Anton, Robbie Kennealy, Alex Quarterley, Andrew Chapman, and Gavin Ray completed the top 10 in sixth through 10th, respectively.
As for Corry, who led a race-high 49 of the 57 laps, he crossed the finish line in 15th, the second-to-last driver on the lead lap.
In his series debut, Tovo won the pole, but had to drop to the tail end of the field at the start due to unapproved adjustments.
Corry led the field to the green flag alongside fellow Nitro driver Mia Lovell, but the two missed the turn 1 chicane and incurred a stop-and-go penalty.
Corry piloted his No. 25 back to the lead and withstood several restarts as multiple drivers endured off-track excursions throughout the race.
Tovo weaved his way through the field and ran in second when the final caution came out with a few laps left.
When the white flag flew, Tovo and Corry banged fenders, allowing Steckly to briefly take the lead before Massey snatched the victory on the final dash to the checkered flag. Massey’s victory shrinks Trevor Huddleston’s points lead, as Huddleston was P13, and there are now five races left in the 2026 season.
