Shane van Gisbergen Wins O’Reilly Race at Sonoma

Shane van Gisbergen hasn’t skipped a beat at Sonoma Raceway. He returned to victory lane in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series on Saturday afternoon (June 27), his second victory at the track in the last three years.

SVG won from the pole, driving the No. 9 part-time entry for JR Motorsports that he’s now taken to two road course wins in three starts driving the car.

It’s SVG’s sixth career win overall, continuing his dominance at NOAPS road courses. He led 31 laps on the way to victory at Circuit of the Americas back in February and, at Sonoma, he won after leading 66 of the 79 laps in the event.

Connor Zilisch finished runner-up in the No. 1 JR Motorsports car, nabbing a stage win as well. Brent Crews finished third, while Anthony Alfredo, the opening stage winner, finished fourth. Parker Retzlaff completed the top-five finishers.

“I feel like we were pretty evenly matched, Shane and I, and just needed a caution,” Zilisch told Frontstretch after the race. “We just had the same gap that entire last run and he was probably managing, I felt like if we had a restart or something, it would’ve been more fun.”

“I felt like we were opposite strategy of the winner there but [were] able to get a lot of stage points and a lot of points overall today,” Crews told Frontstretch after the race. “Overall, a good learning day, passed it feels like 300 cars.”

Carson Kvapil, driving the No. 91 car for DGM Racing, Corey Day, Jesse Love, Sam Mayer and Sheldon Creed finished sixth through 10th. Taylor Gray was on his way to finishing inside the top 10 but ran out of gas on the final lap, slumping to 29th in the final results.

Justin Allgaier continues to hold a commanding lead in the standings despite a mediocre 26th-place result. He still has a 207-point edge over Jesse Love in second place with just a handful of races left in the regular season. Crews entered into a Chase spot, moving up to 11th while Taylor Gray occupies the last spot by 20 points over his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, William Sawalich.
