George Russell delivered in the clutch, grabbing pole for the MSC Cruises Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, handily beating Mercedes’ teammate Kimi Antonelli, who was third, and the streaking Lewis Hamilton, who finished second.
Russell’s final Q3 lap of 1:14.679 was just 0.064 faster than Hamilton in a Q3 session on Saturday (June 13th) interrupted by the early crash of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Hamilton’s second was an additional benefit for Russell, who hopes to somewhat loosen Antonelli’s firm grip on the world championship.
McLaren’s Lando Norris was fourth, followed by the Red Bull’s of Mac Verstappen and Isack Hadjar.
Q3
Leclerc’s Q3 found a disastrous start as he slid his Ferrari into the gravel trap and wall when he lost control between Turns 4 and 5. The session was red flagged just three minutes in and Leclerc locked himself into a start of 10th on the grid.
Q3 restarted with just over eight minutes left in the session. Russell aced the middle sector and took provisional pole with a 1:15.145, while Antonelli was over two-tenths back in fourth. Russell’s time was 0.031 ahead of Piastri, who set his time before the red flag.
Antonelli was first to launch a second effort, with Russell just behind him. Antonelli’s 1:14.998 put him on top briefly, before Russell’s 1:14.679 replaced him atop the timing.
Hamilton did Russell a favor by knocking Antonelli off the front row, with the Ferrari’s 1:14.743 just .064 behind Russell.
