For the second week in a row, it was Denny Hamlin’s day in the NASCAR Cup Series. Despite winning the pole, the Chesterfield, Va., native started from the tail of the field for damage repairs but won the Firekeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday (June 7).
The victory carried historic and personal significance for Hamlin as the 63rd of his Cup career, tying him with the late Kyle Busch for ninth on the all-time series wins list. That is just one of several significant stats to emerge from an eventful weekend in the Irish Hills of Michigan.
38 – Average Finish for Connor Zilisch in the Last 3 Races
Connor Zilisch’s lamentable maiden voyage in the Cup Series continued at Michigan, spinning out and hitting the inside wall on the backstretch just nine laps into the 200-lap race. That followed an initial spin for Zilisch on lap 2.
The 19-year-old from Mooresville, N.C., now owns the dubious honor of three consecutive last-place finishes, a far cry from the potential Zilisch flashed in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series in 2025. Zilisch sits 35th in Cup Series points, ahead of only Cody Ware among full-time drivers.
With that being said, all of the Cup greats had to go through a learning curve in the early stages of their careers. For Zilisch, the mission for the balance of the 2026 season can be summed up in two words: log laps. The 2026 season may be a lost cause, but Zilisch has the talent to be around the Cup Series for a long time. Now, he just needs the experience.
0 – Laps Led by Ford
It was a rough Sunday afternoon in the Mitten for the Ford stable, none of whom seriously contended for the win. In fact, the blue ovals combined to lead no laps, the first time the manufacturer did not lead in a Cup race at Michigan since June 1983.
This marks the latest low point in a 2026 season full of valleys for Ford. As of now, the OEM has only four drivers in the top 16 in points; of those four, two—Brad Keselowski and Austin Cindric—are currently holding on to the final two Chase spots at 15th and 16th. Ryan Blaney remains the only winner for Ford through 15 races thanks to his victory at Phoenix Raceway.
Another example of Ford falling further behind Toyota and Chevrolet can be found in the manufacturer’s standings, in which the blue ovals are a distant third.

11.110 seconds – Margin of Victory
Hamlin took the lead for good with 39 laps remaining, using a big run down the frontstretch to pass Spire Motorsports teammates Carson Hocevar and Daniel Suarez.
From there, Hamlin put on a clinic, distancing himself from the field to win by the fitting margin of 11.110 seconds over runner-up Erik Jones.
Not only does the margin perfectly match the number of Hamlin’s No. 11 Toyota, but it is also the largest margin of victory of Hamlin’s career. It doubles as the largest margin of victory so far in the 2026 Cup season, topping Shane van Gisbergen’s 7.288-second win at Watkins Glen International. In both instances, the winner came from far back to pull away from the competition.

One can imagine how dominant Hamlin would have been on Sunday if he had gotten to start from the pole instead of at the rear.
11 – Caution Flags
The number of the day must have been 11 because that was also the number of cautions on Sunday. That set a new Cup Series track record for Michigan, a history that goes back to 1969 and includes 109 Cup races at the two-mile oval. The previous record was 10 yellows in the August 2006 race, won by Matt Kenseth.
The 54 caution laps are the third-highest total in MIS history. If the pace car could accrue laps led, it would have had the second-highest total behind Chase Elliott.
20:31 – Length of the Red Flag Following Christopher Bell & Chase Elliott Crash
Out of all the incidents that marred Sunday’s race, none stood out more than when Elliott got loose underneath Christopher Bell, leading to both drivers hitting the wall on lap 148.
In particular, Bell’s contact with the wall was among the hardest in recent memory, significantly damaging a portion of the SAFER barrier in turns 3 and 4 to the point that race control called for the red flag. It took safety crews just over 20 minutes to repair the wall and make it race-ready again.
Per team owner Joe Gibbs post-race, Bell suffered wrist and ankle injuries from the crash, and it remains to be seen if it will cause him to miss any races.
46 – Points Denny Hamlin Gained on Tyler Reddick
For the first time in weeks, we’ve got ourselves a battle for the points lead. Hamlin’s win, coupled with Tyler Reddick wrecking out and placing 35th, has narrowed the latter’s points advantage to just 51.
Reddick’s once sizable points lead has been cut into considerably over the past six races, and at Michigan on Sunday, Hamlin took a noticeable bite out of the apple.

Make no mistake: Reddick is still having a stellar season. But what once was a runaway for the regular season title has now turned into a two-horse race for the top seed in the Chase.
