Jeff Gordon posted a lap time of 19.079 sec. and a speed of 99.251 mph to top the charts in the first NASCAR Sprint Cup practice of the weekend. Gordon, an eight-time Martinsville winner, could take over the wins lead at the track among active drivers with a victory on Sunday. He’s currently tied at eight with teammate Jimmie Johnson. Johnson was 19th on the board in practice.
Rounding out the top 5 in the session were Joey Logano, Denny Hamlin, Jamie McMurray and Brad Keselowski. Paul Menard, Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch, Tony Stewart and Martin Truex, Jr. filled out the top 10.
Other championship contenders included Ryan Newman (11th), Carl Edwards (12th), and Kevin Harvick (15th).
