Jimmy Fennig May Step Down as Roush-Fenway Racing Crew Chief After 2014

Carl Edwards isn’t the only member of Roush-Fenway Racing and the No. 99 Ford who will leave after the 2014 season.

Reportedly, crew chief Jimmy Fennig will also depart from his spot on the top of the pit box at the conclusion of the 2014 season.

According to the original report from Fox Sports, the 28-year veteran crew chief will step aside after the end of this NASCAR Sprint Cup season.

It is speculated that Fennig would likely assume a role within the Roush-Fenway Racing R&D department.

“We don’t have a plan yet,” said team owner Jack Roush. “We haven’t heard definitively from Jimmy what his plans are, but he may be thinking about retirement. We’re just not sure.”

Fennig has worked with some of the sport’s biggest stars, including Bobby Alison, Dick Trickle, Kenny Wallace, Jamie McMurray, David Ragan, Matt Kenseth and Kurt Busch. He won his only Sprint Cup Championship with in 2004 with Busch.

Making the situation even more interesting is the fact that Trevor Bayne still does not have a crew chief lined up for his full-time debut in the Sprint Cup Series next season.

  1. Godspeed and good wishes to Jimmy Fennig! When I go to the races, I like to listen to the radio with Carl Edwards and his crew chief. I can see that Jimmy has been a big part of his success, as mentioned by Carl. I hope he’s happy and successful in whatever he decides to do. Thanks for helping the 99!!
