Matt McLaughlin’s Thinkin’ Out Loud: 2010 Fontana Spring Race Recap
Uncertainty as to whether the race would run its full distance ignited something fans have never seen during a Cup event at Fontana before… real racing.

Certainly, my favorite story from the Fontana weekend was that of Dave Blaney and PRISM Motorsports.
While 43 race teams prepared their cars for Sunday’s race at Auto Club Speedway, what was happening to three other teams told a different story.
Auto Club Speedway has caught so much bad press that just its mention sparks gnashing of teeth amongst new-school NASCAR fans and traditionalists alike.
This week, here’s a sneak peek at what they all were thinking following the Auto Club 500.
“They could do 10 green-white-checkereds and we’re still not going to make it to the checkered,” said Jeff Gordon.
In Fontana, the status quo returned. Jimmie Johnson had the best car on Sunday, leading eight times for a race-high 101 laps.
One story lost in the shadow of Speedweeks in Daytona was the absence of Carter Simo Racing’s No. 08 car.
What fans often forget is that Jimmie Johnson is the rightful king of California. In 14 starts he has four wins, nine top fives and 10 top 10s.
The hole in Daytona couldn’t be helped. It happens. I can personally testify that severe weather causes unexpected problems.
