On Monday afternoon (June 15), NASCAR journalist Steve Waid died at the age of 77, per an X (formerly Twitter) post by The Scene Vault Podcast.
His death came after a long fight with the after effects of cancer.
Waid was a pioneer in the world of NASCAR journalism, working the beat since 1972. He wrote for the Martinsville Bulletin and the Roanoke Times before moving to Grand National Scene (later NASCAR Scene), where he worked for almost 30 years and became most well known.
For his efforts in NASCAR media, Waid was given the Squier-Hall Award in the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2019. He was the president of the National Motorsports Press Association for 12 years and won the George Cunningham Award as NMPA Writer of the Year and the Henry T. McLemore Award for outstanding lifetime contributions to motorsports. Waid also co-wrote Junior Johnson: Brave in Life alongside Tom Higgins.
In recent years, Waid co-hosted The Scene Vault Podcast with Rick Houston and wrote the column “Waid’s World” here at Frontstretch. Below is a link to Waid’s final article for Frontstretch.
