Top Dog: John Hunter Nemechek
John Hunter Nemechek put together and finished off an amazing fourth-place performance for Legacy Motor Club at Pocono Raceway on Sunday (June 14). Toyota has displayed a lot of speed all season, and you’ve seen it translate across all of its NASCAR Cup Series teams.
23XI Racing blitzed the start of the season with wins. Joe Gibbs Racing has followed it up with continuous strength from the likes of Denny Hamlin. Now, Legacy is flexing its muscle with Erik Jones notching a runner-up last week at Michigan International Speedway and another top 10 today to move above the Chase cut line.
Nemechek has shown speed at points in the past, but he had trouble finishing those types of races off. There would be no doubt about this one, as he claimed his first top five of the 2026 season while achieving a new career-high 42 laps led.
An additional shout-out goes to Front Row Motorsports’ Todd Gilliland, who won stage two at Pocono after saving enough fuel to outlast the front runners.
The Climb to the Top
Nemechek started in the Top 10 alongside his teammate Jones and maintained that standing until flipping the first stage. The No. 42 Toyota restarted at the front early in the second stage and didn’t look back.
In battling Chase Briscoe and his teammate Jones, Nemechek was able to stretch his lead at first before maintaining his stint at the front of the pack. Legacy’s strategy forced both cars to wait on fuel as they made pit stops during stage two, but Nemechek was able to rotate through the cycle well and came home third with eight stage points in the second frame.
Entering the final stage, it turned out to be a performance that was no fluke. It was a Toyota vs. Toyota battle as Nemechek restarted alongside Hamlin on the final restart with less than 50 laps to go. Despite losing out to the veteran, the speed kept up for Nemechek and Jones throughout the final run and green flag pit stop cycle.
William Byron got past the No. 42 during those aforementioned pit stops, and Tyler Reddick rocketed past on his fresher tires, but there would be no other obstacles in the way of Nemechek as he came across the line.
It’s the first top five for Nemechek since the 2025 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
Looking Ahead
Nemechek picked up a few spots in the points standings with his top five, jumping from 28th to 26th as the Cup Series heads to road courses for the next two weeks.
If LMC can continue this type of consistency, there’s no reason why both cars can’t finish inside the top 20 in the point standings. Nemechek notched a top 10 at Watkins Glen International, and as his teammate Jones said post-race on Prime Video, the team has the pace, but needs to avoid chaos.
When it comes to Sonoma Raceway, that hasn’t been as kind to the No. 42 team and Nemechek, who is looking for his first Top 25 in his third start there.
Long term, success this season for Nemechek should be more performances like Pocono and a top-20 points finish.
Top Dogs of the Lower Series
NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series: Jeremy Clements tied Kenny Wallace for the most starts in O’Reilly Auto Parts Series history this past weekend, notching start number 547.
The No. 51 showed consistent top 10-15 speed all race, including scoring stage points in the second stage.
Clements slid back late in the race, coming home with a 16th-place finish. The O’Reilly veteran started 15th, got up to 12th in stage one and secured those aforementioned stage points with an eighth in the second.
Next week, if Clements is to start at Naval Base Coronado as expected, he will own the starts record by himself.
Team Scheme of the Week
It’s been a brutal rookie season for Connor Zilisch, but Trackhouse Racing brought some heat to Pocono. The Chevrolet team has had some real standout alternate schemes this season, and this one for the No. 88 was no exception.
Roto Rooter hopped on board for the race with a good blend of purple, red and white navigating The Tricky Triangle.
Zilisch started deep in the field in 28th and mustered a 23rd-place run after getting caught up in the chaotic mess off Turn 3 in stage two. He’ll be among the favorites the next two weeks at Naval Base Coronado and Sonoma.
