NASCAR Mailbox: Could Shane van Gisbergen Ever Win On an Oval?

Shane van Gisbergen took the NASCAR Cup Series field to school as he dominated last weekend’s race at Sonoma Raceway.

He’s won two races in a row and three for the season, but all of them have come on the road courses.

While van Gisbergen has shown improvement on the ovals as of late, could he win on one this year?

Kevin Nix answers this week’s question for NASCAR Mailbox on Frontstretch’s YouTube channel.

  1. Anybody has a chance to win Dega and Daytona. Hey Austin Dillon won at Daytona and he only had to punt the leader at 200mph. Oh that’s right, they don’t run 200 now, they bunch up in the 175 range and ride there. Put more HP at short tracks which a smart person would do and see what Shane could do. Might do fine, might not.

  2. Honestly, SVG’s two best shots at winning an oval this season were/are Pocono and Indy. Road racers normally adapt quicker and do better at these two tracks, compared to other ovals. But with how bad SVG was at Pocano, even before the wreck in stage 2, I doubt he will be a factor at Indy either. Maybe he could win one of the two remaining plate races, but he tends to do better at Atlanta over Daytona or Talladega, so I doubt he wins either.
