Chase Burrow Wins CARS Tour Race at Langley as Tempers Boil

The zMAX CARS Tour took its annual beach trip to Langley Speedway on Saturday (May 31), returning to a track that has become a staple on the CARS Tour schedule.

On a night affected by weather and filled with tempters, Virginia’s Chase Burrow struck for his first CARS Tour win at the track he calls home.

Burrow picked up the win by 0.816 seconds over Jared Fryar, with Matt Waltz rounding out the podium. Tristan McKee and Chad McCumbee finished out the top five.

Behind the frontrunners, a race of attrition broke out, with multiple cases of hurt feelings at the end of the night.

Local driver Waltz earned the Thunder Road Harley-Davidson pole award and led the 23-car field to green. But his lead would be short-lived. Points leader Landen Lewis made quick work of Waltz on the start, working around his outside to take the lead on lap 1.

Lewis led Waltz for the first 45 laps leading into the first competition caution, as a majority of the field rode in line to save their equipment for later in the race. Lewis and Waltz lined up opposite of the initial start, with Lewis now on the inside of row one.

Just like the initial start, the outside car got the jump. Waltz powered around the No. 29 of Lewis for the lead. But the change at the front was short-lived as a broken axle for Lanie Buice brought out the yellow just one lap later.

The following restart showed more of the same, as Lewis, now the outside car, powered around the No. 2 of Waltz for the lead. Mini Tyrrell moved Waltz up the track for second shortly after, as Waltz began to struggle on both ends of the track.

The yellow flew once again on lap 69 thanks to an incident involving Hettinger Racing teammates Donovan Strauss and Parker Eatmon, along with Fryar. With rain on the way, the intensity ramped up on the restart as cars began to slide around, knowing the impending storms could bring a premature end to the scheduled 125-lap feature.

Tyrrell got a massive jump on Lewis following a restart on lap 72, even leading a lap before Lewis regained the lead. Connor Hall worked to the outside of Tyrrell, which eventually turned into a three-wide with Waltz that caused damage to the right-front of Tyrrell’s car. The damage forced Tyrrell to pit road and ended a promising night for his No. 81 team.

Shortly after, the rain came, bringing the chaos to a halt as a brief summer shower passed over the speedway. When the red was lifted, Lewis led the field back to green with 47 laps to go and Hall just behind.

With 41 laps to go, Lewis’s bid for three consecutive wins fell apart as his car began to lose power, eventually rolling to a stop on the back straightaway just two laps later.

The race resumed with 39 laps to go and three hometown heroes at the front. Hall attempted to fend off Waltz and Burrow for the lead, but couldn’t keep Burrow at bay. The pair swapped the lead multiple times before Burrow finally completed the pass with 28 to go. As Burrow pulled away, Hall began to fade down through the top five.

Burrow’s lead was erased with 11-laps to go as Justin Carroll spun off the nose of Landon Huffman down the front stretch. The field bunched together for an 11-lap dash with multiple drivers looking for their first career win at the front. The yellow flew again shortly after as Carroll retaliated against Huffman, spinning the No. 57 with five laps to go.

The ensuing restart led to a multi-car crash in turn 3 as Brandon Pierce spun off the nose of Carson Loftin‘s No. 22. But while tempers started to boil over behind, it was all Burrow at the front of the field.

Burrow held off one final challenge from Waltz and Fryar on the final restart to score a big win at his home track.

The CARS Tour will be back in action on June 14 at Dominion Raceway, with both the Late Model Stocks and Pro Late Models competing.
