Marcus Ericsson, Kyle Kirkwood and Callum Ilott initially finished second, sixth and 12th, respectively, in Sunday’s (May 25) 109th Indianapolis 500, but they will now be credited with 31st, 32nd and 33rd — ordered from highest finisher to lowest finisher — after failing post-race technical inspection. IndyCar announced the news in a press release Monday afternoon.
The Andretti Global cars of Ericsson and Kirkwood were found to have modifications to the Dallara-supplied Energy Management System (EMS) covers along with unapproved spacers and parts for the cover-to-A-arm mounting points.
The PREMA Racing car of Ilott, meanwhile, failed to meet the minimum endplate height and location specification for the front wing assembly.
In addition to having their points and prize money shifted to reflect their new finishing positions, each team will receive a $100,000 fine and a one-race suspension for their competition managers. All are expected to serve it at the next race on the schedule, the June 1 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix.
