Frequent severe weather and lighting have postponed Sunday’s GEICO 500 for the NASCAR Cup Series at Talladega Superspeedway to Monday afternoon.
The green flag is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on FOX and also be broadcast on MRN Radio and Sirius XM Radio Channel 90.
Rain and severe weather, which included lightning, hampered ongoing track drying efforts that were eventually abandoned in favor of postponing the race to Monday.
This marks the second consecutive Cup race at Talladega rescheduled to Monday, following last fall’s event also being pushed a day later with Ryan Blaney winning the 1000Bulbs.com 500.
Talladega Superspeedway does not have lights that can illuminate the racing surface for on-track activity.
Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Martin Truex Jr., Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch will lead the event to the green flag followed by Jimmie Johnson, and Kevin Harvick.

Why didnt they start the race at noon. Its normal to have thunderstorms in the south in the afternoon especially during this time of year.
The NETWORKS decide the time for the broadcast to come on AND the time when the green flag will actually start the event.
And yet, they will need to learn a lesson in weather.
TSN 1 and 3 at 3PM Eastern Monday.
Hopefully they won’t have any more pre-event crap and get the green a few minutes after 3.
I think you mean weather and lightning or weather and lack of lighting.
fox here in Atlanta had infomercials going when I turned on tv at noon.
The telecast started at 3. Maybe they should start events in Alabama in the summer at 10 in the morning before it got really warm. Maybe they’d be over by 5 in the afternoon with all the stages and cautions and red flags.
Hahaha… check out (google) “TMZ Sports NASCAR” and you will see that someone hired a plane to fly above Talladega today with a banner with the confederate flag and the slogan “Defund NASCAR”.
There was also a parade with a bunch of fans driving around outside the track all with confederate flags flying.
You probably won’t see that covered by any of the established pro-NASCAR media. It doesn’t fit the story they want to craft.
I love it when Big Brother tries to tell people what they can and can’t do only to cause a bigger problem as people go out of their way to defy them.
