Joe Gibbs Racing’s lineup has been solidified for the 2020 season. The four-car team announced on Friday (Sept. 6) Erik Jones will return to the No. 20 car in 2020 following months of speculation about his future with JGR.
“I’m so happy to finally have my plans for 2020 confirmed and to talk about it,” Jones said in a statement. “I’m excited to be staying with Joe Gibbs Racing and the 20 team and to continue the success that we have built over the last two years in the Cup Series.
“I put my heart and soul into this and this team. This is my living and how I want to make a career and what I want to do. I’ve been racing with JGR since 2014 and it’s really cool to be able to continue with the foundation we’ve built over the years and hopefully win more races and contend for championships together.”
Jones is fresh off winning the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, his second career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory.
“Erik has accomplished so much in our sport already and yet, he really is just at the start of a long career,” Joe Gibbs, owner of Joe Gibbs Racing, said in a team release. “He’s been a part of Joe Gibbs Racing for almost his entire professional career and we’re excited to see what the future holds for him.”
Details were not released about the length of Jones’ new contract.
He has 23 top fives and 45 top 10s in 100 career starts, split between JGR and Furniture Row Racing.

Nothing screams “I’ve got your back” and “I have faith in you” and “You have a home here” like a 1 year contract.
Gibbs, “You win, I’ll give you a 1 year contract. You win multiple races…well I’ll give you a multi year contract” I hope Jones continues to grow and perform with Gibbs.
Congratulations to Erik! Watch your backside – I wouldn’t trust Joe Gibbs any further than I could throw him, and I’m 77 years old!
Sorry, I fear it will end badly. maybe not. The only two in recent times who have survived that machine known as JGR is BABY BUSCH AND DENISE HAMLIN. If they did not have their rides fully funded they would be shown the door too. IMO of course. Any other driver has/had not a chance, and it is proven time and again the revolving door at that driver mill. The list is endless, it really is staggering..they SEEM to use em’ up and spit them out. My perception and opinion.
I cannot stand JGR and do not support a single sponsor associated with them, not that they care…whatever.
