Erik Jones Tops Troublesome Opening XFINITY Practice at Dover

Erik Jones won opening practice for the XFINITY Series at Dover International Speedway after posting a lap time of 22.699 seconds (158.597 mph).

Ty Dillon finished second in the session, a mere 0.010 seconds behind, followed by Joe Gibbs Racing’s Daniel Suarez and Matt Tifft. Alex Bowman, who will make his first NASCAR start of 2016, completed the top 5.

Early in the session, Darrell Wallace, Jr. hit the wall in his No. 6 Ford. After a short red flag period, Richard Petty Motorsports’ Jeb Burton spun off turn 4 and slammed head-on into the inside SAFER barrier. He walked away uninjured.

The trouble wasn’t finished on Friday as Paul Menard hit the turn 3 wall in his No. 2 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. Despite the hit, Menard still posted the ninth quickest time.

Both Burton and Menard would go to back-up cars in time for final practice at the Monster Mile.

Elliott Sadler, who is two weeks removed from a victory at Talladega, finished the session sixth, followed by Joey Logano, Brandon Jones and Justin Allgaier in the top 10.
