Anyone who watched the last three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races should not be surprised to see Joey Logano at the top of the leaderboard at the end of the first practice session of the weekend.
Logano, who won at Charlotte, Kansas, and Talladega earlier this month, posted a fast lap of 19.161 seconds, good for 98.826 mph. Jeff Gordon, in his last race at Martinsville, posted the second-fastest time at 19.251 seconds.
Logano’s teammate Brad Keselowski was third in the session, with Kevin Harvick and Casey Mears, both looking to rebound after Talladega, rounding out the top five.
Kasey Kahne, Jamie McMurray, Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer and Matt Kenseth completed the top 10 in the lone Friday session.
Chase drivers not in the top 10 include Martin Truex Jr. (13th), Carl Edwards (17th) and Kurt Busch (22nd).
Mears was the best non-Chase driver in the session.
