After leading a career and race-high 83 laps at Las Vegas Motor Speedway en route to a third-place finish, Ross Chastain was on rails again at Phoenix.
When NASCAR Cup Series drivers took to Las Vegas Motor Speedway (Mar. 6), Ross Chastain was ready for his time in the sun. Sporting a car sponsored by the Academy of Country Music Awards with Dolly Parton donning the quarter panels, Chastain nearly took Trackhouse Racing Team to victory lane for the first time in its short history.
It had been nearly a decade since Richard Petty’s famous No. 43 had started on the front row for a NASCAR Cup Series race. The last occurrence happened in 2013, when Aric Almirola sat on the pole for the fall Talladega event.
However, the streak came to a halt with the Wise Power 400 at Auto Club Speedway (Feb. 27) when Erik Jones piloted the No. 43 to the outside pole position.
With several underdogs looking to capitalize on a golden opportunity in the 2022 Daytona 500, it was the defending champion who led the way once the checkered flag waved on the 64th Great American Race.
