Layne Riggs Survives Chaotic Finish to Win at Naval Base Coronado

Layne Riggs stood tall after an all-out war in overtime to win at San Diego Naval Base Coronado in Friday’s (June 19) Navy 250. It was Riggs’ third win in the last four NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races, and he has officially swept the street races in the series.

Riggs led a race-high 21 laps out of the 53 run, plus he scored the victory in stage one, netting him 65 points to help extend his championship lead. It was his fifth win on the year.

“Layne van Riggsbergen came to play today, man,” Riggs told FOX Sports after climbing out of his truck. “I got my second street course win, we’re undefeated at street courses.”

Riggs passed Tyler Reif after the driver of the No. 42 made a mistake in the second to last corner, as Reif overshot the corner and had to come to a stop to avoid a time penalty.

Reif was extremely upset after he came so close to scoring his first career victory in just his seventh truck start. He said that he was pushing too hard to keep the No. 34 behind him and it cost him the win.

“My mistake, it’s very unfortunate that I did that and I don’t know how many more chances I’ll have like this but I’m sure there’ll be more,” Reif said to FOX. “I’m gonna make sure to not make that mistake again.”

Reif, Riggs and Daniel Hemric all battled it out for the win on the last two laps after the two leaders for the overtime restart, Chandler Smith and Kaden Honeycutt, made contact exiting turn 1. Both drivers were wiped out of contention for the win just moments after the race got back underway.

Hemric was able to sneak by the chaos in the chicane of turn 15 and snag a runner-up finish. He was happy to leave the track with such a great result after a rollercoaster day from practice all the way to the checkered flag.

When asked post-race what his emotions were when it was all over, he simply said “I don’t know.”

Kaz Grala grabbed third, while Landen Lewis and Ty Majeski rounded out the top five with fourth- and fifth-place finishes, respectively.

Kaulig Racing RAM teammates led the charge for the rest of the top-10 finishers, with Justin Haley placing sixth and Brenden Queen coming home seventh.

Ben Rhodes, Christian Eckes and Gio Ruggiero completed the top 10 after surviving the mid-pack melee on the final restart.

Truck Series Results at Coronado

The Craftsman Truck Series will be on hiatus for a few weeks before the teams take on another road course at Lime Rock Park. The LiUNA 150 will be held on Saturday, July 11, at 1 p.m. ET. FS1 will carry the race broadcast.
