Corey Day Wins Dover O’Reilly Race After Late Battle With Justin Allgaier

After a tough couple of races for Corey Day and the No. 17 team, they returned to form on Saturday afternoon (May 16) with a trip to victory lane.

Day chased down Justin Allgaier and passed him with four laps to go to win the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series BetRivers 200 at Dover Motor Speedway. It is Day’s second win of the season and second of his career.

“This one feels really, really good,” Day told The CW broadcast on the frontstretch. “The Talladega one was unexpected, we earned that one.”

Allgaier finished runner-up while Sam Mayer, William Sawalich and Austin Hill rounded out the top five. Brandon Jones, Carson Kvapil, Ryan Sieg, Sammy Smith and Anthony Alfredo completed the top 10.

The last four laps were the only four he led all race. Allgaier led 71 laps after taking the lead in the final stage by cycling to the front with a differing pit strategy. Allgaier lost the lead to Day as he struggled to get around lapped traffic — and in particular, Blake Lothian — in the final laps.

“He (Lothian) kind of made a move to go inside and then back outside, and then I just didn’t know which lane he was going to go in,” Allgaier told The CW broadcast on pit road. “Unfortunately, I let the 17 get to my outside. Hats off to Corey, he was running me down there at the end.”

Jones won the first stage and led 31 laps, and Ross Chastain won the second stage, leading 68 laps on the day.

There were a handful of major incidents in the race, with the first one occurring on lap 12 when Brent Crews slapped the wall after contact with Ryan Sieg. Jeb Burton, Parker Retzlaff and Lavar Scott crashed behind Crews while they were all trying to check up.

Later on, Rajah Caruth and Jesse Love tangled after a restart where they took off from the front row, marking the third time this season the two drivers got together.

Caruth later spun again, this time with Harrison Burton after Smith tried to force them three-wide. He eventually backed out, but it still threw off Caruth’s entrance to the corner.

Chastain and Taylor Gray also got together off of turn 4 which sent Gray into the inside wall. Chastain was able to save the car and just missed the top 10, finishing 13th.

On the bright side for Allgaier, he opened up his points lead over Sheldon Creed to 175 points. William Sawalich got back into The Chase by five points over his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Brent Crews, who dropped down from 11th to 13th in the standings.
