Joe Gibbs Racing’s Taylor Gray picked up his second career NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series win at Kansas Speedway after gaining the lead during the final pit cycle of the race.
“I knew we had a car capable of winning,” Gray said in victory lane to The CW broadcast. “I thought the 20 was a little better than us before the green flag cycle but knew I just had to stay locked in.”
Sheldon Creed finished runner up after leading 48 laps and starting at the rear of the field, while Justin Allgaier, Jesse Love, and Brent Crews rounded out the top five. Creed won the Dash 4 Cash $100,000 prize.
“Great day for us, having to start in the back and I kind of knew right away my car was really fast,” Creed said on pit road to The CW broadcast postrace. “I was able to drive to the front and just had a lot of fun today.”
William Byron, Cole Custer, Brandon Jones, Sam Mayer, and Ryan Sieg completed the top 10.
It did not take long for chaos to erupt on track on Saturday night (April 18) as polesitter Carson Kvapil went upside down on the second lap of the race after contact with teammate William Byron and Parker Retzlaff. Kvapil flipped a couple of times before landing on his roof but later walked away unharmed after the safety crew put the car back on all four wheels.
The other major incident in the race also occurred during the opening stage as Austin Hill spun out while battling inside the top 10 with his Richard Childress Racing teammate Jesse Love. William Sawalich was also involved in the crash and this contact took Hill out of the race entirely.
Brandon Jones swept both stages, led 67 laps, and was in contention to win but an uncontrolled tire penalty on the last pit stop of the race ended his chances of winning at Kansas for the fourth time in his career.
Justin Allgaier remains the points leader in the driver standings, now 131 points up on second place Sheldon Creed. Jesse Love, Corey Day, and Brandon Jones are third, fourth, and fifth in the standings respectively.
