After pitting on Lap 206, William Byron went the final 144 laps at Iowa on one fuel tank, saving just enough fuel to beat Chase Briscoe and Brad Keselowski — and do a burnout — while taking back the points lead.
Caleb Barnes and Samuel Stubbs share their thoughts on this race, and these fuel mileage finishes in general. Three times now, the leader in supposedly the worst fuel position still hangs on to win the race. Barnes and Stubbs share whether or not they expected Byron to hold on to the finish.
Part of the reason Byron even had the chance to stretch his fuel tank that long can be credited to a large rash of cautions in the middle part of the race. Do these cautions make things more entertaining because of their contributions to strategy shake-ups, or are they more frustrating than anything?
Finally, the two discuss the role of the car, once again, in creating the cautions, making passing impossible, and helping Byron fend off faster cars while also saving fuel.
After this race, there certainly was a lot to talk about, but just a little time to do so. Check out Stock Car Scoop on Apple Podcasts and Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts!
