Former NASCAR driver Rex White has passed away on Friday, July 18. White, the former NASCAR Cup Series champion and NASCAR Hall of Famer, was 95.
White’s Cup career spanned from 1956 to 1964, amassing 28 career wins in 233 races, including a championship in 1960.
“We mourn the loss of NASCAR Champion and Hall of Famer, Rex White. Rex epitomized the formative days of NASCAR — a true pioneer whose contributions helped shape the foundation of our sport,” NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France said in a statement. “His hard work, dedication, and talent allowed him to make a living doing what he loved most — racing cars. He was the model of consistency — finishing in the top five in nearly half of his races — and dominated the short tracks. On behalf of NASCAR and the France family, I want to offer our condolences to the friends and family of Rex White.”
White was also inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2015 for his career accomplishments.
White was most successful at 0.25-mile Bowman Gray Stadium, logging six wins there. He compiled 28 wins, 110 top fives, 163 wins, 36 poles and 4,850 laps led.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of NASCAR legend Rex White,” the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame added. “On behalf of the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame (GRHOF), we extend our deepest condolences to Rex’s family, friends, and fans during this difficult time.”
