Will Power Takes 71st IndyCar Pole in St. Louis

Will Power posted a blistering lap around World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway to secure the 71st pole position of his NTT IndyCar Series career during Saturday’s (June 14) qualifying session.

Power’s lap clocked at an average speed of 180.329 mph, over half a mile per hour faster than Scott McLaughlin, who qualified second.

“I sent it, a lot,” Power told FOX after the race. “I knew you would have to. You’d have to try to be flat in turns 3 and 4, which I wasn’t quite flat, but very, very close. But yeah, cool, man! It’s been a while since I’ve had a pole, so I’m really excited for the Verizon No. 12 car. Chevy did a great job, good power. Hopefully we can execute in the race — it’d be awesome to get a win here.”

The second row will be composed of Pato O’Ward and David Malukas, the latter being a prolific short oval racer who nearly took an upset win at Gateway in 2022. Malukas spoke to Frontstretch following his qualifying run, which put him on provisional pole position at the time.

Defending Gateway winner Josef Newgarden will start fifth and will share the third row with Marcus Armstrong. Armstrong’s Meyer Shank Racing teammate Felix Rosenqvist will line up directly behind in seventh.

Colton Herta, Alex Palou and Kyle Kirkwood rounded out the top 10.

Marcus Ericsson also spent time on the provisional pole when he posted the first lap to average 177 mph, though this time only placed him 13th by the end of qualifying.

Speaking to Frontstretch, Ericsson was content with his run and said he looks forward to Sunday night’s race after a few years of daytime running at the track.
