Lance Stroll will not compete in Sunday’s (June 1) Spanish Grand Prix, Aston Martin announced on May 31.
According to the team, Stroll has been dealing with some discomfort and pain in his right hand and wrist for around six weeks. His medical team believed that the pain was related to the surgery Stroll had when he fractured the same hand in a cycling accident just prior to the 2023 season.
As such, Stroll decided to withdraw from the race and will undergo surgery to correct the issue. It is unclear whether or not the surgery will keep him out of any future races.
Stroll had originally qualified 14th for the Spanish Grand Prix. Due to FIA regulations, Aston Martin cannot put a relief driver in the car at this stage of the weekend, and therefore will withdraw Stroll’s car altogether. Stroll’s teammate Fernando Alonso will be the lone Aston Martin to race on Sunday as the field of 20 F1 drivers shrinks to 19.
Stroll currently sits 11th in the World Drivers’ Championship, scoring 14 points off of back-to-back top 10s to start the season, as well as a fifth-place finish in the Miami Grand Prix Sprint race.
