GMG Racing’s Kyle Washington led flag-to-flag from the overall pole Sunday morning (May 18) to win GT America powered by AWS Race No. 2 at Sebring International Raceway. It is Washington’s third win of the season.
Washington won by 7.591 seconds over SKI Autosports’ Memo Gidley. Turner Motorsport’s Justin Rothberg was third, then Mishumotors’ Mirco Schultis.
By virtue of having the fastest lap in Race No. 1 on Saturday, Washington started on pole in his Porsche. When the green came out, Washington was able to open up a nice gap over Saturday’s winner Memo Gidley.
With the advantage of clean air, Washington was able to put together a string a good laps in order to open up the gap over Gidley. Within a few minutes, the lead was up to three seconds.
From there, it was a fairly lonely race for Washington. He was able to continue to expand his lead over the full length of the race en route to the win.
The only real trouble for Washington occurred on the cool down lap. While driving back around to the pits, he cut his right rear tire and was forced to limp back to the paddock.
In GT4, it was only a two-car race between 89x Motorsports’ Michael Fitzpatrick and JTR Motorsports Engineering’s Anthony McIntosh. The two battled early on for the advantage, but the battle ended just before halfway due to a unenforced error.
Fitzpatrick ended up dropping a wheel exiting turn 5 and spun across the track and into the tire barrier. McIntosh was able to avoid the spin and keep on going.
Fitzpatrick was able to get his Aston Martin out of the barrier and drove away. However, he chose to pull off the track at the hairpin by going past the current turn complex and making a left at the old hairpin.
Fitzpatrick’s retirement gave McIntosh the victory by default as Farhan Siddiqi did not start the race.
