Justin Allgaier Returns as Reserve Driver for Kyle Larson

Justin Allgaier will once again be a reserve driver for Hendrick Motorsports and Kyle Larson’s No. 5 Chevrolet, the team announced May 14.

Allgaier will be Larson’s substitute driver for All-Star Race practice and qualifying along with being named the reserve driver for the Coca-Cola 600 as Larson looks to complete all 1,100 miles of racing between the two marquee races.

“We’re fortunate to have Justin and we appreciate him stepping in to help,” Cliff Daniels, crew chief for the No. 5 team, said in a team release.

“I think that serves him well and it serves us well. He’s had some time in the simulator driving the track and he did the wheel-force test there a year ago, so he’s got some experience in the Cup car at North Wilkesboro. We’re looking to put in a solid practice and make sure the car drives good.”

Allgaier filled in for Larson in last year’s Coca-Cola 600, scoring a respectable 13th-place finish. Larson finished last year’s Indy 500 in 18th, earning the Rookie of the Year award for the race.

Through 12 races in the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season, Larson leads the Cup standings with three race wins and nine top-10 finishes. Allgaier leads the Xfinity Series standings with two wins through 12 races.

All-Star Race practice and qualifying begins on Friday May 16 with coverage on FOX Sports 1 staring at 5:05 p.m. ET.
