In this week’s installment of Open Wheel Open Mic, Alex Gintz returns to the show to recap an NTT IndyCar Series finale at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca that saw Will Power earn his second career title and Alex Palou smash out a dominant performance amidst off-track turmoil.
Reflecting on a spectacular season of American open-wheel racing, Gintz and host Jack Swansey offer their way-too-early 2023 predictions for Scott Dixon, Scott McLaughlin, Kyle Kirkwood and others, before taking stock of NASCAR-champ-turned-IndyCar-wheelman Jimmie Johnson‘s options for 2023 and beyond.
Segueing into Formula 1, they recap a by-the-numbers Italian Grand Prix weekend that saw Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen extend his championship lead, and fellow Dutchman Nyck De Vries score points for Williams in place of Alex Albon.
They finish out the episode by debating whether or not there is a spirit of the F1 regulations, amidst concern that top-scoring teams may be taking grid penalties on purpose.
Frontstretch.com’s Open Wheel Open Mic will return in November.
The F1 Singapore Grand Prix from the Marina Bay Street Circuit will air Sunday, Oct. 2 at 8 a.m. ET on ESPN.
Jack Swansey primarily covers open-wheel racing for Frontstretch and co-hosts The Pit Straight Podcast, but you can also catch him writing about NASCAR, sports cars, and anything else with four wheels and a motor. Originally from North Carolina and now residing in Los Angeles, he joined the site as Sunday news writer midway through 2022 and is an avid collector (some would say hoarder) of die-cast cars.
