Reed Sorenson will drive the No. 27 for Premium Motorsports in the NASCAR Cup Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway, FOX Sports’ Bob Pockrass tweeted Monday, Feb. 3.
Sorenson’s addition to the prospective entry list gives the Daytona 500 seven non-charter teams attempting the race at press time. The No. 27 joins Kaulig Racing’s No. 16 (Justin Haley), MBM Motorsports’ Nos. 49 and 66 (Chad Finchum and Timmy Hill, respectively), Gaunt Bros. Racing’s No. 96 (Daniel Suarez), Rick Ware Racing’s No. 54 (JJ Yeley) and Beard Motorsports’ No. 62 (Brendan Gaughan) as teams that will need to race their way in.
Premium’s No. 27 raced most of the Cup schedule in 2019, including the Daytona 500, where it fielded Casey Mears in a partnership with Germain Racing.
Sorenson made multiple starts for the team and other suitors in 2019, landing an average finish of 32.7 in 25 starts. His best result came at Talladega Superspeedway in the spring, finishing 18th in the No. 27.
It’s currently unclear if Premium plans to field the No. 27 in other races outside the Daytona 500 in 2020. The team will run Brennan Poole in its chartered No. 15 for the rookie of the year battle.
