JR Motorsports has named Justin Allgaier’s car chief Billy Wilburn as interim crew chief for this weekend’s NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway and next weekend’s trip to Pocono Raceway.
Following his victory in the final Dash 4 Cash event at Dover International Speedway, Allgaier’s No. 7 team was hit with an L1 violation. NASCAR’s penalty reported stated the truck trailing arm spacers and pinion angle shims were not in complete contact with the corresponding mating surface.
As a result, crew chief Jason Burdett was suspended for two races and fined $25,000. Additionally, Allgaier was docked 25 driver and owner points. The victory also will not count toward a playoff berth for him. He was, however, allowed to keep the $100,000 Dash 4 Cash bonus.
JRM opted not to appeal the penalty.
“As a highly competitive race team that challenges for wins each and every weekend, we’re deeply disappointed and frustrated in today’s ruling,” JRM General Manager Kelley Earnhardt Miller said in an issued statement after the penalty announcement. “We strive to produce race victories for JR Motorsports’ partners, fans and employees while adhering to the rulebook. To that end, the No. 7 team put on a winning performance in Saturday’s race and received damage on the last lap that we believe contributed to this infraction. We will never fault ourselves for that.”
For his part, Allgaier made an Instagram post in which he indicated late-race contact with his teammate caused the problem.
Allgaier currently sits fourth in the point standings, 58 markers behind teammate Elliott Sadler, who leads. He has six top fives and seven top 10s in 10 races this season.
