Jeb Burton’s making just his second NASCAR XFINITY Series (or NASCAR national series as a whole) start of 2017, but he’s off to a good start.
The part-time driver for JGL Racing’s No. 24 led first practice for the Coca-Cola Firecracker 250 at Daytona International Speedway Thursday (June 29) at a speed of 190.215 mph. That speed was quick enough to top both practices held at the track that day.
Cole Custer, Spencer Gallagher, fellow part-timer Casey Mears and Cup driver Ty Dillon rounded out the top five in the first practice, while Daniel Suarez, Ryan Reed, Dakoda Armstrong, Joey Logano and Matt Tifft filled out the top 10.
While 38 drivers practiced in the first practice, only 16 took a lap in practice two, led by Ray Black Jr. at 182.035 mph. That speed would have been good enough for 27th in the first practice.
Jeremy Clements, JJ Yeley, Blake Koch and Timmy Hill rounded out the top five.
Qualifying for Friday’s race will be held at 2:10 p.m. ET Friday, followed by the race at 7:30 p.m., the first event of the season broadcast on NBC Sports Network.
