For the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, there are 36 cars entered in Saturday’s Continental Tire 120 at the Glen. The Grand Sport class is flat with the entry at Circuit of the Americas in early May. A couple of teams took some hard hits (most notably CJ Wilson Racing’s No. 35 Porsche), but everyone is back. This includes the No. 69 Motorsports in Action McLaren, which caught fire while being rolled out to the grid in Austin.
The Street Tuner class is where the interesting tidbits are located. There are five more teams entered than there were at COTA. Three of those teams will making their season debuts.
Riley Racing, which has not raced their No. 66 Mazda since Lime Rock last July, is entered. AJ and Jameson Riley will do the driving. In addition, the Goldcrest Motorsports-run Strategic Wealth Racing team returns for their first race of 2017. The team will once again have Matthew Dicken and Corey Lewis drive the No. 36 silver, yellow and blue Porsche Cayman. While Lewis has his full-time ride for Change Racing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, Dicken has been racing in IMSA Prototype Challenge in a LMP3 entry. Prototype Challenge is on the undercard in Watkins Glen, so Dicken will be doing double-duty.
There are two teams making their series debuts as well. Kensai/DXDT Racing has entered a Porsche Cayman for David Askew and Aaron Povoledo. This is a team that debuted in the Pirelli World Challenge Sprint-X weekend at Utah Motorsports Campus last year with an Audi R8 LMS Ultra. Povoledo has previous driven in the class for C360R, but for Askew, Saturday will be his series debut. Team Octane has entered the first customer MINI JCW in the class. Adam Isman, formerly of Autometrics Motorsports, will drive the No. 47 MINI JCW alongside of Alain Lauziere.
Finally, there is one driver change of note. Robby Foley is out of the No. 27 Freedom Autosport Mazda MX-5. Matthew Fassnacht will race in Foley’s place. Fassnacht is a regular in Pirelli World Challenge’s TCA class for S.A.C. Racing that has competed for Freedom Autosport in the past. Foley will still be in Watkins Glen racing in the IMSA Prototype Challenge.
