He may not own a Grandfather Clock, but Jamie McMurray is looking strong at Martinsivlle Speedway.
One of the first drivers out onto the relatively cool 0.526-mile oval, McMurray clocked in a lap of 19.566 seconds (96.780 mph). That was enough for McMurray to lead the way in second practice on Saturday, beating Joey Logano by 0.009 seconds.
David Ragan continued to show strong pace, ending third in the session for BK Racing, just 0.022 seconds behind McMurray.
Rounding out the top 5 are Martin Truex, Jr. and AJ Allmendinger, who will both start from the top 5 in Sunday’s Goody’s Fast Relief 500.
Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman, Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson completed the top 10.
While turning in the fourth quickest time in the session, Truex was fastest in the ten-lap average as well. That shows that the polesitter may very well have long run pace as well. Stewart had the second best ten-lap average, followed by McMurray, Kyle Larson (who was 15th quickest in the session) and Johnson.
The final practice session for Sprint Cup teams at Martinsville is scheduled to start at Noon Saturday. Coverage will start on the NBC Sports App, while TV coverage will pick up at 12:30.
