On the spot this week: IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship rookie Ashley Freiberg, who will be splitting her time in 2016 between Turner Motorsport’s No. 96 BMW M6 GT3 in the GT-Daytona class and Starworks Motorsport’s No. 88 in the Prototype Challenge class.
What’s fun for you besides [car] racing?
Cyclocross racing. It’s an off-road race on a bicycle. The course is usually about two miles long. The race is 45 minutes long and its an all-out sprint through tight turns in the woods or a grassy field. You do have to get off your bike and carry it over obstacles.
What’s the top item on your bucket list?
[To] race at Le Mans. Doesn’t matter what it’s in.
What’s your go-to on movie nights?
I don’t watch much TV. Some kind of comedy, nothing particular.
What’s the one item that’s always in your grocery bag?
Probably eggs. I eat a lot of eggs.
What’s your most memorable fan interaction?
There was this little girl at [VIR]. Her dad comes to me and says, “My daughter doesn’t think girls can drive race cars.” She was this little sweet girl, all decked out in pink, glasses and all.
She looked up at me. I said, “You don’t think girls can drive cars?” She says no. “Well, I drive this car. Not only can we drive these cars, we can win.” Her face just lit up. She was blown away. Later on, she was telling her dad about how she wanted to become a race car driver.
