It was a Penske-dominated day in Xfinity Series qualifying at Watkins Glen, with Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski posting the top-two lap times in both of the sessions and the end result being Logano on the pole for the Zippo 200.
The pole was Logano’s 30th of his career, tying Mark Martin for second-most on the all-time pole list, and his first on a road course. In seven starts at the track, Logano has four top 10s and three top fives, with a best finish of second in 2010. He was third in this race a year ago.
Keselowski, who has finished runner up in three of the past four Sprint Cup Series races at the same track, has finished no worse than ninth in six starts at the 2.45-mile facility and went to victory lane in the NXS race one year ago.
Chase Elliott qualified third at a speed of 123.521 mph, trailing Logano’s speed of 124.308 mph. The defending series champion will look to continue his gains in the points towards to the top spot following last weekends race at Iowa Speedway. Kyle Larson will start his No. 42 Chevrolet in fourth, with NXS points leader Chris Buescher starting in fifth. In three NXS starts on road courses, Buescher has one win, coming at Mid-Ohio last season.
Ty Dillon will start in sixth, followed by Boris Said in seventh. Said will be driving the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. Regan Smith, coming off a runner-up finish in Iowa, will start eighth, with Brian Scott, Paul Menard, Elliott Sadler and Daniel Suarez as the top 12. Suarez will start the race in a backup car after a crash in final practice coming off of the bus stop, but will be able to start the 82-lap race from 12th.
