On Wednesday morning, the newly-renamed Haas F1 Team announced their power unit supplier for their 2016 entry into the Formula One World Championship. Based on previous press releases from the team, it is not much of a surprise.
Haas F1 Team announced that Scuderia Ferrari will serve as a technical partner to the new outfit. Through this technical partnership, Haas F1 Team will use Scuderia Ferrari-built power units (the terminology now used to describe the engine, the kinetic energy and electrical generators, in addition to the turbo) and Scuderia Ferrari-built eight-speed gearboxes. In addition, the team will receive technical support from Scuderia Ferrari.
Haas F1 Team owner Gene Haas is very happy to officially have Ferrari onboard.
“There is no team in Formula One more accomplished than Scuderia Ferrari, and no team with more history. They’ve been a part of Formula One from the beginning, and now they’ll be a part of Haas F1 Team’s beginning,” Haas said in an official press release. “Formula One is the pinnacle of motorsports. It showcases the latest technology and is the most competitive form of racing in the world. Aligning Haas F1 Team with such a tenured and successful company in Scuderia Ferrari provides our team with the greatest opportunity for success in 2016 and beyond.”
Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Marco Mattiacci is also happy to have Haas F1 Team in the fold.
“We’re delighted to announce this important strategic partnership with Haas F1 Team and to welcome an American player as a new entrant in Formula 1,” Mattiacci said. “A few months ago, we joined forced with Gene Haas on a commercial level and this is the natural next step of our growing relationship. While our objective is to reinforce our power unit development program for all our customer teams, we believe this new partnership has the potential to evolve beyond the traditional role of supplying our power unit and all related technical services.”
With an important technical partner that will provide power units and gearboxes in hand, now Haas F1 Team has to start the development process for their first chassis. There is still plenty of time (approximately 18 months) between now and the team’s scheduled first race, but a lot of work (and hiring) must be done both in the United States and in Europe
