On Wednesday, Furniture Row Racing announced that driver Martin Truex, Jr. will sit out practice and qualifying at Michigan International Speedway on Friday. Truex’s girlfriend, Sherry Pollex, was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer and Truex is planning to stay back in North Carolina in order to spend more time with her.
In Truex’s absence, defending Camping World Truck Series Champion Matt Crafton will practice and qualify the No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet. Truex currently plans to be in Michigan on Saturday morning to participate in the two scheduled practice sessions and will race in the Pure Michigan 400 on Sunday.
Furniture Row Racing General Manager Joe Garone expressed his sentiments in a press release.
“Everyone at Furniture Row Racing extends their thoughts and prayers to Sherry during her treatment and recovery period,” Garone said. “She is a devoted supporter of our race team and we can’t wait for her return to the track.”
Since the news was announced, well wishes have come to Truex and Pollex from all over, notably via Twitter. The couple thanks everyone for those well wishes. However, they have also requested that their privacy be respected as Pollex begins her cancer treatment.
