Dollars And Sense: UNOH Commits To Increased Exposure In NASCAR

Just as many corporations large and small debate on whether they should continue their NASCAR sponsorship deals, a small non-profit University in Ohio with the nickname of “Racers” has announced they are increasing their marketing exposure in the sport. Last week, Bristol Motor Speedway announced that the University of Northwestern Ohio will be sponsoring both the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race and the NASCAR Whelen Modified event.

Get your learn on: The University of Northwestern Ohio is venturing into the world of NASCAR sponsorship. Thankfully, they aren’t dolling out tattoos and iPads like that other university in Ohio…

UNOH was already a sponsor of Richard Childress Racing’s No. 3 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Ty Dillon of the Camping World Truck Series. This was in addition to many partnerships within other levels of racing outside of NASCAR. The UNOH Perfect Storm Doubleheader on Wednesday August 22nd begins with The Perfect Storm Whelen Modified 150, followed by the UNOH Camping World Truck Series 200.

“Since we were the first University in the world to offer an accredited degree program in High Performance Motorsports and needed to brand our product and recruit students, race marketing was the obvious choice for us,” Steve Farmer, UNOH vice president corporate development tells “Frontstretch.com”:https://frontstretch.com.

“Our first program with NASCAR began in 2008. We started out as a contingency sponsor for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Weekly Racing Series. Our involvement with them has steadily grown over the past 5 years to where we are today. Since our involvement with NASCAR, we have branched out to race event sponsorship as well as other forms of motorsports, such as World of Outlaws, NHRA Motocross and All Circuit of Champions (Sprint Cars).”

This could be somewhat of a sponsorship coup, as it will be the first racing at the Bristol, Tennessee track since the highly publicized grinding of the racing surface after fans deemed it to be too smooth. All eyes will be on how hard the racing will be, and UNOH will get noticed by many who haven’t been exposed to the University as of yet.

“Everyone at the University of Northwestern Ohio is very excited about extending our partnership with Bristol Motor Speedway to the Camping World Truck Series,” said Dr. Jeffrey A. Jarvis, president of UNOH in a media release. “We’ve been sponsoring the Modified event since 2009 and the opportunities it has given our students, staff and facility since we started have been immeasurable. The relationships that we have established with the people at Bristol Motor Speedway, the race teams, and the fans have made our experience such that we felt like we wanted to turn it up a notch, so to speak. We honestly can’t wait for August 22 when we’ll have our name on both races that night.”

“The University of Northwestern Ohio has been an amazing partner for Bristol Motor Speedway,” said Jerry Caldwell, executive vice president and general manager of Bristol Motor Speedway. “They really embraced the Modified event and quickly became an integral part of our family. It’s really great to have them come on board as our Truck race sponsor and we’re thrilled to have them sponsoring both ends of the Wednesday night doubleheader this year. We’re definitely looking forward to continuing to build our relationship with Dr. Jeffrey Jarvis, Mr. Steve Farmer, and everyone at UNOH.”

Dr. Jarvis will be the Grand Marshall for the Truck Series race later this month. UNOH is committed to sponsor the race through 2016. This will be the final season for UNOH as title sponsor of the Whelan Series event.
