Weeks after being released from the Mayo Clinic for an undiagnosed illness, Wood Brothers Racing’s Trevor Bayne is being withheld from action in this weekend’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, as well as the Nationwide Series race at Iowa Speedway.
“Although we would like for Trevor to be on the track this weekend, we want to make sure that he is fully back to prime condition before he goes out to compete with the best drivers in the world,” said Roush Fenway president Steve Newmark.
Bayne was first hospitalized for symptoms of what he thought was an insect bite following the Texas race in April. Two weeks later, Bayne was back in the hospital as the symptoms – nausea, dizziness and vision impairment – persisted.
The medical tests and trips to the hospital have not allowed Bayne to fulfill his duties at the shop and at the track, thus leading to Roush Fenway Racing’s decision to delay his return to the car. Although the team says Bayne’s symptoms have “improved tremendously” they are unwilling to send him out on the track when he is not feeling 100%.
Shocking the world with his impressive Daytona 500 victory, Bayne struggled the following weeks before being sidelined by the mysterious illness. While he initially believed the symptoms were the result of a spider or insect bite, doctors have yet to diagnose Bayne’s condition.
“We knew all along that there was not a timetable for his return,” said Eddie Wood, co-owner of the Wood Brothers. “We knew it would be a process and we continue to work towards his return. Trevor really wants to be back and we remain hopeful that we’ll have him competing again soon.”
While Bayne will not compete in Saturday night’s Sprint All-Star Race (May 21), the No. 21 pit crew will participate in Thursday night’s NASCAR Sprint Pit Crew Challenge.
