Shane van Gisbergen Tops Cup Series Qualifying at Sonoma

Shane van Gisbergen turned the fastest lap in qualifying from Sonoma Raceway at a speed of 96.040 mph, earning the right to lead the Cup Series field to green in Sunday (July 13) afternoon’s Toyota/Save Mart 350.

The fourth pole of the Kiwi’s career is his second in as many weeks and also completes the sweep of each pole this weekend, which he also did last weekend at Chicago.

Chase Briscoe will start alongside van Gisbergen on the front row after clocking in at second for Joe Gibbs Racing.

William Byron starts third as the quickest Hendrick Motorsports car, alongside SVG’s Trackhouse teammate Ross Chastain in fourth. AJ Allmendinger completes the front five starters and will start next to Ty Gibbs, who rolls off sixth.

Ryan Blaney spun late in the session, but his fastest time still has him starting seventh in the fourth row with Tyler Reddick, who starts eighth. Alex Bowman rolls off ninth, while Christopher Bell completes the top 10 starters.

Defending Sonoma race winner Kyle Larson will take the green flag tomorrow from 11th. Katherine Legge did not turn a qualifying lap in the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet while the team repaired a brake issue from practice and will start in 37th.
