IndyCar Title Talk: Alex Palou Rebounds, Extends Championship Lead to 93 Points

Championship leader Alex Palou in the No. 10 SOLO Chip Ganassi Racing Honda extended his lead in the standings to 93 points after claiming his sixth victory in nine races at Road America on Sunday (June 22).

The Spaniard’s march to a fourth championship in five seasons took a major step forward as he took victory ahead of Meyer Shank Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist. Early in the race, an abundance of early cautions led to several different fuel-saving strategies. It was a case of being in the right place at the right time for Palou and the 10 crew after Scott Dixon had to pit for fuel.

“It was a crazy race,” Palou said. “There were moments I thought we were losing a ton of positions. It was a tough race for everybody. Kudos to the team for the amazing strategy and Honda for giving us the fuel mileage we needed at the end to make it.”

Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood, the only other driver to have won races in 2025, has moved into second place in the championship following his fourth place on Sunday.

It was a disappointing race for Pato O’Ward, who started from 11th and came home in 17th. By doing so, he has relinquished second in the standings.

Meyer Shank Racing and Rosenqvist were extremely impressive this weekend! The Swede delivered the team’s best result on Sunday since Simon Pagenaud finished second at the 2022 GMR Grand Prix on the IMS road course. As a result of the podium, Rosenqvist, who has had a great season to date with MSR, has moved up two places in the championship to fourth, equal on points with six-time series champion Dixon. Marcus Armstrong delivered an equally impressive top-five result for the team as well after an up-and-down season.

AJ Foyt Racing’s Santino Ferrucci has moved up two places in the championship following his second podium finish in three races after he finished third at Road America. Foyt has shown this season that they can compete with and beat the likes of Chip Ganassi Racing and Team Penske, the latter of whom they have a technical partnership with.

Christian Lundgaard in the No.7 VELO Arrow McLaren Chevrolet has dropped from fourth to sixth in the standings following a tough XPEL Grand Prix of Road America. After showing early speed, he spun out late in the race, and he finished the race in 24th place after having started the race from fifth.

Team Penske’s tough season continued in Road America this weekend with Will Power and Scott McLaughlin maintaining their seventh and eighth places in the championship, respectively. For Josef Newgarden, however, the Tennessee native’s troubled 2025 season continued with a second race retirement in succession. He took another hard hit as he spun into the wall in turn 14. Newgarden heads to Mid-Ohio in July having dropped to 17th in the championship with 137 points.

Honda Racing Corporation U.S. is on cloud nine as they have swept the season so far and head to Mid-Ohio leading the manufacturer’s championship by 183 points. This gives the California-based outfit a massive boost amid speculation surrounding their future in the sport.
