Louis Foster Wins 1st Career IndyCar Pole at Road America

Louis Foster shaved his mustache for charity before this weekend at Road America.

It must have given him an extra boost to earn his first-ever pole position in the NTT IndyCar Series on Sunday (June 21).

The Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing rookie laid down a speed of 138.263 mph in his No. 45 Honda, flying faster than IndyCar points leader Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing, who fell short in his final push lap with 138.11 mph.

Foster is the first rookie to win the pole on a street course or road course since Romain Grosjean’s pole in 2021 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course for Dale Coyne Racing.

“Absolutely awesome,” Foster told FOX Sports 1. “The 45 crew has been amazing all weekend. Couldn’t have asked for a better start to the weekend. I still can’t believe it. We went fast on old and new [red tires]. Thank you to RLL Racing. We’re going to celebrate tonight.”

Firestone Fast Six

Kyle Kirkwood had a problem with the MGU in the final round of qualifying, but it didn’t stop his Andretti Global Honda from taking third. Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin will join him in row two.

Christian Lundgaard fared best from Arrow McLaren, and RLL’s Graham Rahal rounded out the Firestone Fast Six. RLL were the only team to place two drivers in the Firestone Fast Six.

Round 2

David Malukas was the final driver across the line in round two of qualifying, but was just short of his third straight Firestone Fast Six.

Two of the three Team Penske drivers will line up nose to tail on Sunday in eighth and 10th after Will Power and Josef Newgarden fell short of the final round of qualifying.

PREMA Racing advanced to their first Fast 12 of the season with Callum Ilott. He was able to make a ninth place effort

Round 1 – Group 1

Newgarden came close to another disappointment this season before he ended up transferring through after Scott Dixon was dinged for impeding Devlin DeFrancesco on his push lap.

Dixon slotted to the end of the order behind fellow CGR teammate Kyffin Simpson.

DeFrancesco also went wide off the track in Turn 14 during the session.

Marcus Armstrong started third in last season’s race racing for CGR. Instead, he will start mid-pack in 15th, the second driver out of the round.

Group 2

Following his first-ever podium finish at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, Christian Rasmussen went wide in the final corner while attempting a banker lap.

The Andretti drivers of Marcus Ericsson and Colton Herta were eliminated by late runs of Malukas and Rosenqvist in the closing moments of Group 2 qualifying.
